Let me tell you about the wonder treatment that is internal tooth bleaching. Ok, so it sounds like something altogether unpleasant, but if you have a tooth that is discoloured due to trauma or something that no amount of teeth whitening will fix, then you seriously need to hear about the wonder treatment that I got at My Dental Clinic in Sandymount.
Let me bring you back a few years ago, when I was a wee nipper in 4th class. One Sunday in April of that year, my friend and I decided that we were sick of watching golfers try their luck at the Masters. We thought we could give this golf thing a go, so I snuck into the garage and stole two of my dads golf clubs and a few golf balls. Off we pottered over to the park across the road, with my little brother in tow. My brother was 4 at the time and he was like my little sidekick and where I went, he was with me.
After knocking a few balls around the park we got bored fairly quickly and my friend had the bright idea of trying to hit the ball through the metal railings. The bright spark that I was, decided to stand on the other side of the fence to see if the ball came through. Well long story short, the ball went straight through the bars in the direction of my brothers head. I pushed him out of the way, and took the ball full force in the mouth, knocking out half my front tooth and killing the nerves in my bottom tooth.
Fast forward 20 years and I had never in my wildest dreams thought I could do anything about the discoloured tooth and while it did bother me, I had learned to live with it to an extent. That was until my first visit to My Dental for my braces fitting and to my surprise, Dr Natalia informed me, that of course they could fix it with a very easy treatment called internal bleaching.
Internal bleaching sounds awfully painful and if you google the treatment, it sounds like something from the dark ages, but I can 100% guarantee you, that there is nothing to it at all. Internal bleaching takes place over a number of sessions . Mine took 3 sessions, but it can take up to 5.
For my first session, Dr Natalia cleaned out the inside of the tooth by scraping out the decay and then placed the treatment inside the tooth. Im not 100% what the treatment was, but I am inclined to say it was bleach of some description. The treatment didn’t actually hurt at all, but the noise of the scraping did leave me a little shook. Once the bleach was placed inside the tooth, I was then placed under a special light for about 45 minutes so that the treatment could start to work. Something to note here, is you must keep your tongue away from the treatment, as I fell fast asleep, woke myself with a snore and hit my tongue off the treatment and burnt my tongue a little. It was nothing major, but it is something to be aware of, as i was mortified!! Once I was finished under the light, the tooth was then temporarily sealed up, with the treatment left inside. This process was then repeated 3 more times over a 2 week period.
I am delighted with the difference in the colour of my tooth. This picture doesn’t show up exactly how discoloured it was, but is was quite obvious in real life. Now you wouldn’t know that there had ever been any trauma with the tooth.
If your tooth has ever had any trauma, or is so discoloured that teeth whitening won’t lift it, then this is 100% something that you need to look into. I didn’t even know this treatment existed, but now I want everyone to know about it.
You can find out more about the treatment on Mydental.ie, but the complete treatment costs €250 and in my honest opinion, it is money well spent.
